School Background

Government Model High School, Sector 37-C, was established in the year 1986 under the aegis of the School Education Department, Chandigarh. Located in educational block number 6 in the city beautiful of Chandigarh, the institution is a co-educational, single shift school catering to the needs of around 500 students. Spread over an area of 5426 sq. metres, the school offers an enriching environment for the students with a playground and several other facilities such as a kid’s adventure park, science and knowledge park et al. The Headmistress of the school, Ms Renu Bala has vast academic experience in the School Education Department, Chandigarh. Under her leadership and mentorship, the school has progressed by leaps and bounds. The notable features of the school are described as under.

PRINT-RICH ENVIRONMENT

The school has a range of accessible printed materials like books, charts and wall displays. This enhances the students’ language and literacy skills. The walls in the primary classes work as learning aid itself. They are well illustrated and arouse the curiosity of young learners.

BALVATIKA

Balvatika includes classes Balvatika 1, Balvatika 2 and Balvatika 3. It is a foundational pre-primary program designed for children aged 3 to 6. Introduced by the Chandigarh Education Department and the Samagra Shiksha mission to align with the NEP 2020, these play based classes focus on foundational literacy and numeracy through experiential learning. It strives to develop skills related to the following key areas-

  1. Language and literacy skills
  2. Math and cognitive skills
  3. Fine and gross motor skills
  4. Self care and independence
  5. Social emotional skills

SALIENT FEATURES

1.READING CORNER-There is a reading corner in every class where books are put on display. This fosters a learning environment where students have easy access to reading material.
2. JADUI PITARA/MAGIC BOX- It is a play-based learning-teaching material launched as a part of the New Education Policy (NEP 2020). It comprises of puzzles, flashcards, worksheets, storybooks et al. These arouse students’ curiosity and aid in developing their foundational skills.
3. KIDS ADVENTURE PARK-The school houses a kids adventure park which comprises of a sand pit where students can play various games. There are kids outdoor play equipment to ensure their physical and mental well-being.
4.TEACHING METHODS-Hands-on learning and play-based activities are practiced to meet the learning needs of the students.
5. ASSESSMENT-There are no formal examinations to assess the students’ performance. Instead assessment is done through observation. The faculty members are well qualified to take care of the students’ learning needs.

SPECIAL FEATURES

A. SCIENCE & KNOWLEDGE PARK – The Science Park offers hands-on learning, interactive exhibits, practical experiments and outdoor elements to connect with nature, supporting education.

B. KITCHEN GARDEN – The kitchen garden Program connects students with nature. The program is focused on food education, practical skills and wellbeing, with curriculum integration.
C. HOUSE SYSTEM – Our school has 4 houses. The students are divided into these four houses-Subhash, Tagore, Gandhi and Kalam respectively. This system encourages students to work together towards common goals. By participating in inter-house competitions, students learn to handle both victory and defeat gracefully.
D. MID-DAY MEAL – As per The National Programme of Nutritional Support to Primary Education (NP-NSPE) popularly known as the Mid-day-Meals (MDM) scheme aims to cover all students in classes I to VIII. The objective of the programme is to give a boost to universalisation of Primary Education by increasing enrolment, attendance and retention and simultaneously impacting on nutritional status of children in primary classes. The mid-day meal is provided to the students in this school from MDM kitchen, Govt Model High School 38D, Chandigarh.

E. CWSN – The right to education is an integral facet of the guarantee of equal rights for children with disabilities and their social inclusion. Our school makes all efforts to accommodate and educate special children encouraging them and supporting them in every way. Every child is a different kind of flower and all together make this world a beautiful garden. The main emphasis is on adapting the child, so that they can be trained to face the challenges of the world.

F. LIBRARY – The school houses a Library covering 600 sq. ft. space with Senior and Junior Sections, stocked with about 2170 books and various kind of other readable material that cover fiction and non- fiction in all genres and subjects. It also has a stock of multimedia materials (CDs, DVDs and videos) for use in the classes. In fact, the library specializes in the reference section where the students are actively encouraged to use the library for independent study and for their presentations and projects. Library stocks are routinely updated with latest addition of the books available in the market. The school library caters to the need of all classes from Nursery to X.

G. MEDICAL ROOM – School Health Committee has seven members which include five teachers and two students. Medical room has a single bed for patients, informational charts and first aid kit.
H. MUSIC ROOM – There is music room facility in the school where the students learn to play various musical instruments.

OUR LABORATORIES

A. SCIENCE LAB – School has a well-equipped Science Laboratory for conducting various practical works. Children are naturally inquisitive and innovative. So they are motivated to learn practically by doing experiments and interacting with each other through practical skills, observations etc. Science Laboratory is a perfect place and a powerful tool for understanding and investigating life related problems. It enables children to identify where and how new researches and developments in science and technology can bring sustainable development of society.
B. MULTIMEDIA ROOM – Our School has three multimedia rooms on each floor. Each room caters to the needs of primary, middle and secondary classes. videos and graphics related to their subjects. Students get ample opportunities to use multimedia for enhancing their learning skills.
C. COMPUTER LAB – Our School has a Computer Lab. This lab consist of sufficient number of computers to give practical knowledge about technology. Well Qualified and Experienced teachers are there to provide proper practical knowledge of computers. The computer Lab is equipped with latest updated Software, LCD Monitors, Projector for teaching purpose and for conducting Seminars. The Practical classes are conducted in different modules for all classes.
D. HOME SCIENCE LAB – There is home science lab in the school to conduct activities such as cooking.

FIRE SAFETY SYSTEM AND EVACUATION PLAN

Keeping in mind the safety of students and staff members, our school has a good working fire safety system at place. The building has Evacuation plan placed on each floor with important emergency signs. Mock drills are conducted from time to time to prepare everyone to face any natural disaster.

CLUBS AND COMMITTEES

The school has many functional clubs and committees for the benefit of students and staff members. Youth Club, legal literacy club, Health Club, Eco Club etc. Several committees like Mid-day Meal committee, disaster management committee, School management committee, Sexual harassment redressal committee comprising of School head, Staff members and students are also working for the smooth functioning of our school.

SPORTS FACILITIES

Our school has a big playground with basketball court. Students play a number of games like baseball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis. Each class has a games period as per CBSE guidelines. Sports is an integral part of our school’s curriculum.
